On the compromise between corporate and government dictatorship

In what direction ought we pull society with such a powerful tool as mental control? We can attempt to endow citizens of the United States, for instance, with immunity to the whims of the ultra-rich and powerful. But in the wrong hands neurotechnology can do precisely the opposite. In the United States, control of the populace by industry giants such as Musk through his Neuralink may very well strip the submissive American people of every last bit of liberty and free will. However, allowing a government to regulate neurotechnologies may yield the very same result. For instance, in the hands of present-day China, such a technology would solidify the absolute and total control China exerts over the lives of its subjects.

We must take care not to approach a society which hyperbolizes the United States' today, where large corporations hold free reign not only over their attention and lives, but their very mind and consciousness. And we also must not approach one which may (or may not) hyperbolize present-day China's, where most minds are under the control of the Communist dictatorship. While we must fear enhancing China's dictatorship by government, we must fear just as well enhancing the United States' dictatorship by corporation.
